OUR COMPANY HISTORY WITH SPELT
In the late 1960's our company founder, W.B. French observed common spelt growing in a neighbor's field. The field was tainted with rye, wheat, thistle and other contaminates, but W.B. felt that the crop had potential. From this source he and his son Robert began the purification process, and after several years they were able to offer quality common spelt seed for sale. In the early 1970's, they began an association with Dr. Lafever at Ohio State University. Dr. Lafever was involved in spelt research. The variety Champ was released in 1986 as a result of his selections and crosses.
Four years ago French's added Oberkulmer spelt to their line up. Oberkulmer is a European cultivar tested in Ohio since 1989. This is a pure spelt containing no wheat germplasm in its parentage. In the fall of 1998 2 new pure spelt varieties, Maverick and Comet, were introduced. These varieties were developed here in Ohio.
